When does the corpus luteum atrophy?

The corpus luteum atrophies if a pregnancy has not commenced. This usually occurs around the 24th day of the menstrual cycle. The atrophy of the corpus luteum is due to its secretion of progesterone and estrogen, which reduce the production of FSH and LH by the hypothalamus, in turn lowering the estrogen production by the ovaries.
