When does HIV appear in a test?

The detection of HIV in a test depends on the type of test used and the timing of the infection. The most commonly used HIV tests can detect an infection about 2-8 weeks after exposure. More precise tests, such as PCR tests, can detect HIV’s RNA or DNA just a few days after infection.
