The diagnosis of endometriosis usually involves several different methods. Initially, the doctor performs a gynecological examination and discusses the symptoms. Ultrasound is a common method to detect potential endometriosis lesions. If suspicions are confirmed, a laparoscopy can be performed, which is a surgical procedure where a small camera is inserted into the abdominal cavity to examine the presence of endometriosis. Sometimes magnetic resonance imaging may also be used. The diagnosis is often confirmed by a tissue sample, or biopsy.
